ABSTRACT

Covering or shielding the eyes is a more extreme version of the closed eye activity and often seen when people literally do not like what they see. The eye shuttle is where the eyes move from side to side while the head remains still. This is essentially a ‘flight’ response – darting eyes are scanning for an exit or some kind of help. This insight occurred during some work he was doing with a colleague on expressions of anger and distress. They discovered that making facial expressions alone was enough to create a marked change in the autonomic nervous system. Happiness is the only positive emotion and in research studies people seem hard-wired to recognise when someone else is happy as there was 100% recognition of happiness. The face may be the most informative and fascinating part of someone’s body language, but still put it into context and take note if the face agrees with the rest of their body.
