ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the formation of American nuclear subjectivity through the Atoms for Peace programme as the main Foreign Policy discursive event from 1951 to 1960. It traces the development of positive American nuclear subjectivity incorporating the identity/difference through narratives such as America standing for peace, democracy, scientific advancement, and economic progress of the world – that established American great power identity as tied to the global nuclear order. The chapter acts as the historical context for subsequent chapters of the book.
