ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the Barack Obama administration’s nuclear foreign policy towards India between 2009 and 2017. It evaluates continuation of the civil nuclear deal. The great power narratives and ensuing relations of identity/difference are analysed in the sites of: shares past and common future; achieving peace in neighbourhood: India and AfPak; democracies: shared interests and common values; America ready ‘to support growing economy’ of India; and US-India partnership to address ‘urgent global challenges’ – food security and climate change. It demonstrates how the administration was able to incorporate linguistic tropes from the previous two administrations and successfully engender a global nuclear role for America through representations of nuclear India.
