You may need to prompt, e.g. What will you eat? How will you dry yourself? • Beach bag/travel bag (optional) Rescue Services – UnderstandingEach child has a turn being a rescue service (police/fire/ambulance) to go to the rescue of a vehicle. The child listens to your instruction using two descriptors, such as appearance, function, place and finds it:e.g. "'the blue tractor in the field', 'the big bus at the bus station' • Road/town mat (to lay out with roads etc.)• Variety of toy cars including rescue vehicles laid out on the mat Rescue Services – UseTell the children that a cat has climbed up a tree and got stuck. They're going to need to call the fire brigade to rescue him.A child is given a toy mobile. You also have a phone to receive the call. Then nominate another child to be the fireperson to rescue the cat. Help the child to role-play the scenario.Child: 'Hello I need help. My cat's stuck.'Fire brigade:' Where is he stuck?' Child: 'In a tree in nursery'.Fire brigade:' Ok we're on our way to (Insert name) Nursery.' When the fire brigade arrive, encourage chat through asking questions:e.g. 'He's very high up, what will I need?'. I'll climb my ladder', 'How did the cat get there?', 'Is he hurt? Does he need to go to hospital?' Extend by adding in other rescue services, e.g. ambulance or police. Encourage chat through modelling phrases such as 'Police: what do you need?', 'Why do you need help?' • Toy cat• Two toy phones• Rescue toy vehicles, police/ambulance/fire• Clothes or props to role-play as police/fire/ambulance services (optional) First and then: 'First we played . . . (pause for children to fill the gaps) • Small whiteboard or:• Beach bag• Fire engine Pre-Session Activity: Before the session have role-play outfits and accessories available in the home corner for rescue services so that adults may use the relevant vocabulary and model the use of words such as Help, Rescue, Police, Fire, Ambulance, Hospital etc.
