ABSTRACT

Individuals will have come to an interaction skills group through many different routes. Those who have a mental illness may have become socially isolated and need to learn, or re-learn, skills and regain confidence, to break social isolation and be able to establish and maintain relationships, to fulfil social roles and have their needs met. Some groups may be comprised of young people who want to develop the skills needed to make a success of relationships in all aspects of their future lives. As people interact, their perceptions of others and themselves alter, however subtly. Feelings, attitudes, beliefs and values may also change. When interaction goes well, people feel good about themselves. The goals of individuals in the group may include: Forming better relationships, coping better at work, sharing feelings with others, and controlling social anxiety.
