ABSTRACT

The desirable number of people in a group will be dictated by a number of influences. If using one group facilitator, about eight to 10 group members allows each person an opportunity to participate actively and enables them to express their ideas and feelings. The number of group sessions may be dictated by issues such as time available and the ability of individuals in the group. For this reason, sessions are presented in a flexible manner. Modelling is a process of observational learning. Group members learn new interaction skills by watching someone else demonstrate them. Group leaders are encouraged to reflect on their own interaction experiences when preparing the activities, as a means of thinking through how best to approach an activity and to appreciate how group members may be feeling. Having an initial interview, paying attention to detail, involving group members in setting the guidelines and planning for the group, all help to ensure success.
