ABSTRACT

Enabling group members to recognise what influences how they interact and develop relationships helps them: be aware of what has influenced their ability to interact, motivate themselves to learn and make changes and see the importance of past experiences and self-awareness in the learning process. Recognising what influences how people interact and what makes them interact in the way they do is a first step in thinking about how they can initiate change. Many things influence how individuals interact and relate to other people. It is helpful to think about what these influences are and to decide if they are helpful or unhelpful. Some group members may find this exercise difficult and will need support. The behaviour messages learnt from the people around individuals have a strong influence on how they develop. Thinking through the case study examples will prepare group members for the next activity, when they will be looking at the influences on their own development.
