ABSTRACT

Self-regulation is about being able to focus one’s attention and concentrate on something. This is achieved through a process of blocking out irrelevant stimuli in the environment and inhibiting unhelpful physical and mental impulses. Various methods are used here to help children develop this ability. These include physically making themselves wait for a signal, focusing on only one thing at a time and using visual cues to help organise attention in an activity. The final two games use a sophisticated ‘delayed start’, where children must inhibit the impulse to run until the start of the game has been called by another player.
