ABSTRACT

Students may wonder how they are meant to find the time to get to know each individual as well as build the tutor group and do all the administrative duties expected. Most tutor groups will have some students who are amenable, very low profile and who never seem to seek advice or help. These ‘invisible’ students are often the mortar that holds the group together and they deserve recognition and praise for turning up every day in uniform, doing their work and getting on with their lives. Taking brief notes during interviews with individuals is useful. In building warm relationships, it helps to find out as much as students can and listen well. Supporting individuals is not all about problems. Students will have many occasions to celebrate successes and triumphs with their tutor group. Friendship issues can take a huge amount of a tutor’s time to sort out and can be both rewarding and sometimes really tiresome.
