ABSTRACT

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a planned, developmental programme of learning designed to help learners develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, and in the future. Many schools now have trained teams of PSHE specialists who volunteer to teach the subject. If tutors are expected to deliver the PSHE programmes, then specialist staff will probably be called in to deliver the drugs and sex and relationships elements and some of the other more complex or sensitive areas. PSHE is an important contribution to a students’ education because it covers areas that may not be covered in the rest of the curriculum, but crop up every day in our normal lives. PSHE is learning about life, but many teachers see it as a poisoned chalice because it is rarely given the status it deserves.
