ABSTRACT

Group members, although having initially agreed to take part in the reminiscence activity, may at the last minute feel they prefer the known and secure pattern of their days to this new experience. Alternatively, individuals may be familiar with informal reminiscing on a one-to-one basis with carers, but be less sure about how the process works or feels in a structured group situation. To ease any apprehension on the part of group members, it is important that as individuals gather they are greeted by one of the leaders and helped to find a seat, if possible next to a known and liked fellow member. A warm welcome and introductions by group leaders help to create a secure and sociable atmosphere in an initial group session. An icebreaker activity at the beginning of the session promotes enjoyable contact between group members. One of the tasks of group leaders is to ensure that all group members have a positive reminiscence experience.
