ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses various methods, their alternatives, and related comments for Identifying and Creating Textures, and to Tactile Pictures by group members. This exercise may be difficult for some people, for various reasons, physical or emotional. Some members of the group may prefer to start by touching something they are wearing or own, such as the sleeve of their jumper, their skirt, their hair, or the back of a hand, and describe how this feels. If someone does not want to touch something immediately, leave the item nearby, and allow the person to have control as to when to touch, if at all. Participation can still be accomplished by observation, and by joining in with conversations. Feeling confident in handling art materials and having some control over this is important, particularly when trying to enable people to enjoy art, and the variety of tactile media that is on offer.
