ABSTRACT

It is unlikely that parents will be worried about the school teaching children that people in our community are differently abled. Challenging homophobia is an area where potential tensions can arise from some parents in a school. Parents may believe that their children are too young to learn about sexual orientation or may be aligned to a faith that identifies homosexuality as a lifestyle choice that is unacceptable. Many schools will be able to do work around lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) people without challenge or question and many are doing the work successfully. However, for some schools, for a variety of reasons, teaching children that it's OK to be gay may present challenges. The chapter also focuses on the potential obstacles that some schools may face using books in this resource that challenge homophobia. The strategies used to challenge homophobia can also be used to challenge attitudes towards ethnicity in different areas.
