ABSTRACT

There is an argument that gay and lesbian teachers should be out at school to children: after all, what better way is there to challenge homophobia than to be able to present as a gay role model? The author have been out to children and parents in two schools. He would support and encourage any teacher who feels that they are ready to come out at school, and he would say to every school that they should be encouraging LGBT staff to be open about who they are in the same way that straight teachers are, without thinking. It is the school's responsibility to ensure that teachers are safe and the environment is one where diverse sexual orientation is accepted. He have seen many schools mention straight people getting married in assemblies; often teachers change their name on getting married, which acts as a stimulus for the conversation.
