ABSTRACT

The third chapter deals with the analysis of power by one of the most influential Chinese economists, Hu Angang. Based upon several of Hu Angang’s publications and a number of discussions during my annual visits to Beijing, I present a Chinese approach to the analysis of China strategy and to the comparison between US and Chinese power. The latter is mainly a quantitative analysis based upon solid data, generally from the World Bank. So, this chapter offers a first approach to the historical process through which China has managed to close the gap with the US on every power indicator, except for military resources.
