ABSTRACT

The fourth chapter presents a historical analysis of the development of American power. It starts with the identification of the major components of the ideology that developed since the arrival of the first English colonists, up to the contemporary revision and adaptation of that ideology to the changing place of the US in the international system. This allows us to identify the means used by the US to establish itself as a world power and, at the end of the process, to keep its position as the sole world power. Thereby I illustrate the development and use of different types of resources (based upon the theoretical framework of the second chapter), the resort to the international interactive processes producing these resources, and the establishment and safeguard of the rules of the integrational system (the power structure) that guarantee the US the position of the sole world power. The policy of President Trump is also taken into consideration.
