ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines and critiques accounting and finance education from an empathy for social harmony and equality, and a respect for animals and nature. Cultural imperialism is a profound problem which needs to be acknowledged and not denied or avoided. Cultural assumptions influence the theories that are propounded, and the effect of this is worse when a technical approach predominates, disguising the cultural pretexts. The book sets the background for this reform, justifying why such a reflection is urgently needed and huge drawbacks of mainstream approaches to accounting and finance education. It then provides examples of how the teaching materials and methods can be reformed to meet the present global crises head on and avoid reinforcing its frauds and failures. The book then highlights the benefits of such a reformed and transformative approach for both the teacher and the student and wider society.
