ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an outline of the three major themes considered in the book: (1) the East Syriac Christian tradition and its place within Mesopotamian-Iraqi society, (2) the ecclesiastical history of the Chaldean Catholic Church in light of its dual heritage from the Church of the East as well as the Holy See and Latin Christianity, (3) how the Chaldean community has related to the governing powers in Mesopotamia-Iraq from the mid-sixteenth century through to 2013. I also offer a history of the origins and development of the Church of the East to the early modern period and consider East Syriac Christology.
