ABSTRACT

Serotonin, first discovered in 1948, is a substance found extensively in the human gut, as well as in the blood stream. In the human body it is synthesised from the amino acid tryptophan by various enzymes. A tiny amount of the substance can have a huge impact on behaviour. Imbalances are linked, for example, to mood swings, emotional state, sleeping patterns and appetite. One of a teacher's many tasks is to create a working environment that enables students to feel secure, both physically and emotionally. When they are relaxed and engaged with the learning process, serotonin is naturally released in the brain, leading to greater cognitive awareness and sharper reflexes. People learn and respond when they feel good, positive attitudes and approaches will help the development of emotional literacy in all students and improve their life chances beyond school.
