ABSTRACT

Teachers should never make the assumption that academic, everyday and special occasion behaviours were all taught by the students' previous teacher. The teacher is the role model and leader in the classroom and has the wider responsibility for helping all students to understand and comply with classroom and school systems. Some of these students may have been struggling for many months to make sense of a wide range of academic requirements: behavioural expectations are another layer on top of their classroom work and for many this is a lot to take on. There should not be a robotic-like conformity throughout the school: individuality and personality are important too. Teachers should set out clearly their own expectations, teaching their own systems and consistently applying them within the framework of the school's overall policies. It is also worth taking some time to think about the number of instructions that students receive in the course of a lesson or a whole day.
