ABSTRACT
Finally, in Chapter 11, we turn our attention to soccer. Brazil is, of course, internationally renowned when it comes to soccer, yet rarely is the history of Brazilian soccer and its connections to social class and urban development ever considered. Important also is soccer’s role in constructing regional and national identity, and the sometimes tense debates involving soccer, democracy, and social justice. This final chapter considers these questions, showing the broader importance of soccer in Brazilian society.
