ABSTRACT

An obstacle in cognitive-emotive-behavioural coaching (CEBC) is something that blocks the coachee's path towards their development-based objective in development-focused CEBC (DF-CEBC) or their problem-based goal in problem-focused CEBC (PF-CEBC) or something that hinders their progress towards this objective or goal. This chapter focuses on obstacles to which the coachee responds in an unhealthy way, emotionally, behaviourally and cognitively. It describes identifying, understanding and dealing with actual obstacles can be applied to helping the coachee anticipate, understand and deal with potential obstacles. When the coach and coachee decide to work on the obstacle in CEBC, then their first priority is to identify the obstacle and to decide whether it is indicative of a practical problem or an emotional problem. If it indicates a practical problem, then the "PRACTICE" framework of practical problem-solving can be used, while if it indicates an emotional problem, then the "Situational ABCDEFG" framework of emotional problem-solving can be used.
