ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to initiate the process of cognitive-emotive- behavioural coaching (CEBC). It provides coaches to all backgrounds, including those in training, coaching psychologists and coach supervisors. The chapter explains the distinctions between "enquirer", "applicant" and "coachee" roles in coaching. In the brief, real-time conversation psychologists had with the person, the chapter suggests that they ask the person what they are looking for, the purpose of which was to identify any requests for their coaching help that were inappropriate or unsuitable. They are informed by the coach, but they also inform the coach about their preferences and give their consent, or not, after a period of negotiation. Thus, when psychologists and their coachee discuss their contract it is done within the spirit of negotiating consent. The referral policy should state the conditions under which psychologists would suggest referring their coachee to another professional.
