ABSTRACT

The management style of Korean companies has been frequently dismissed as backward and unprofessional. However, Korean companies have been greatly successful throughout the last fifty years. They have strongly grown while maintaining a high profitability. Moreover, the largest Korean firms have become leading global players across a wide range of manufacturing industries, including electronics, semiconductors, automobiles, steel and shipbuilding. In recent years, Korea also has highly competitive, globally oriented firms in non-manufacturing industries such as software, IT applications and entertainment. The strong performance of Korean firms can be attributed to their specific management style: Tiger Management. Therefore, global competitors should study Tiger Management to understand how Korean companies operate and what they can learn from them.
