ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the three components of the CIA triad. They are: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Confidentiality involves a set of rules or a promise of limiting access or placing restrictions on certain types of information (TechTarget, n.d.a). For long-term/post-acute care LTPAC providers, this means limiting the disclosure of a patient's personal information to comply with policies and regulations, as well as to maintain the trust patients have placed in the facility. Data integrity is the assurance that digital information is uncorrupted and is only accessible or modifiable by those authorized to do so (TechTarget, n.d.c). Integrity involves maintaining the consistency, accuracy, and trustworthiness of data over its entire life cycle. Availability in its simplest form is the guarantee of reliable access to information by authorized people (TechTarget, n.d.b). The guarantee includes the protection of information from unplanned destruction, whether by accident, vandalism, or natural disasters, as well as from facility closures/mergers.
