ABSTRACT

This chapter describes international landscapes for health international technology (IT) in long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC). The International Commonwealth Fund, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote a high-performing healthcare system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, identified ten challenges high-performing healthcare systems around the world need to address. One of Australian studies about health IT in LTPAC settings have focused on gaining efficiencies for clinical staff by assessing the amount of time clinicians spend using health IT systems to document care. Prior to 2010, the earliest research developments in Asia focused on the use of web browsing technology and broadband communication to conduct remote teleconsultations. More specifically, telehealth and telemedicine systems supported the care delivery of LTPAC residents in Singapore and Taiwan. Initial studies in this region explored caregiver and patient perceptions of telehealth and telemedicine approaches. After 2010, European LTPAC technology evaluations increased.
