ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on consortial relationships between researchers and practitioners primarily designed to implement innovations to improve practice. It discusses the more direct promotion of entrepreneurs and commercial enterprises associated with university research. Universities have been increasingly asked to directly involve practitioners in their research efforts, even though these relationships have traditionally been fraught with difficulties. The chapter focuses on a significant program that was pursued with careful strategic thinking in Australia with one that appeared to be primarily focused on faddish adoption in the US. The University of Utah (U) has been very successful in commercializing research—in spite of a lower level of grant funding than such national leaders as Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The core mission of the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) is to facilitate the commercialization of UK innovations and discoveries for the benefit of the university community, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and global society.
