ABSTRACT
This chapter and the next chapter examine human mortuary rites and the deposition of other valued objects in the landscape. The chapter begins in the twenty-fourth century BC when people travelled from mainland Europe through Britain and Ireland bringing new cultural life and knowledge of metallurgy. Burial evolved as an increasingly complex and important tradition within mortuary rites. I make connections between the ways people and things were buried in monuments and in unmarked places, whether together or apart.
