ABSTRACT

The metaphor of the Racism Machine revealed how humans have constructed racism, strengthened it, maintained it, and recalibrated it at various times. Activists have been working on taking apart this machine ever since it was built. However, this machine is very powerful, and if one wheel is removed, another takes its place. Many people think that racism has always existed and is a natural part of the human condition, so they don't question it and don't fight it. The media, criminal justice system, education, and many other systems perpetuate powerful stereotypes and ideologies that block potential coalition building. The earlier future teachers develop an approach through which they reflect on pedagogy, curriculum, and policy in the context of race and power, the stronger their approach will become.
