ABSTRACT

A modern-day web writer can benefit greatly from the advice William Strunk Jr. penned in 1918 in his "little book" of essential rules for good grammar and composition. Less is more when it comes to web writing. Search engine optimization involves editing content and inserting HTML coding to increase the relevance of specific keywords and to remove barriers to search engine crawlers. Typically, web users are on a specific mission, looking for answers to an immediate problem. They want to sort through content, make a decision and then act. One main difference between print and online documents is that the former are tactile: The reader can hold a book or report in his/her hand and flip through the pages. Users entering a site have no idea how many pages it includes or exactly what information it contains. Navigation clues include page titles, subheads, description tags and hypertext links.
