ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book identifies native language identification, attitudes to varieties of English, attitudes to Hong Kong English (HKE), and attitudes to features of HKE. It argues that the status of HKE in Hong Kong cannot be fully understood without also understanding the status of English in Hong Kong. The book examines HKE with respect to other varieties of English in Hong Kong, including American English (AmE) and British English (BrE), as well as in its own right. It provides an examination of attitudes towards and ideologies about the features of HKE is also necessary to better understand the extent to which HKE is becoming accepted in Hong Kong as a legitimate variety of English. The book provides the most comprehensive and complex investigation of language attitudes in Hong Kong to date.
