ABSTRACT

Style refers to the overall way to express ideas in a sentence and even the words chosen in a paragraph and in a paper such as a report. Concise paragraphs that begin with good topic sentences, followed by well-structured sentences of moderate length, create clear, readable papers. Writers often believe they must sound learned, aloof, and sophisticated to impress readers. Most scientific writing should strive for as much conciseness as possible because of the large quantity of information that readers confront. Even in complex, highly technical reports, readers value conciseness: the longer the report, the less likely that anyone will read all of it. To achieve clarity, build sentences with clauses and as many verbs and verbal’s as possible. The more verbs and verbal’s a writer uses, the easier time the reader has in understanding the sentences. The actor or subject should be followed with an active verb that identifies what the actor does.
