ABSTRACT

provides an updated overview of recent developments with regards to China’s evolving approach to security risk management in Africa, focusing on four areas (peacekeeping, naval diplomacy, military cooperation and diplomatic engagement) where the PRC’s re-emergence as an external powerhouse on the continent is pushing the limits of its traditional mindset in this field. This chapter thereafter investigates the key factors that respectively shape China and the EU’s approach to security risk management in Africa. Following this comparison, the final part of this chapter will sketch the interactive nature of their dealings.
