ABSTRACT

This case provides an opportunity for instructors to facilitate a discussion with their students concerning issues facing student-athletes who might realize their sexual and/or gender identity orientation while at college. There are a range of experiences for individuals who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual. The developmental consideration of individuals recognizing themselves in a college context presents challenges and opportunities for sport psychology practitioners working with student-athletes. This case seeks to engage instructors and students in meaningful conversation about how to approach and support a student-athlete in the early stages of recognizing their identity.
