ABSTRACT

Yinjing Irrigation District depends mainly on gravity-flow water diversion. Following the continued expansion of the irrigated area, there was a severe shortage in the quantity of water from river sources. Great efforts have also been made to promote irrigation both before and during the wheat harvest. Unfolding mass scientific experimentation activities is an important measure for raising the level of irrigation management and promoting increased output of grain and cotton. Before liberation, due to the long periods of heavy water use in flood irrigation and irrigation without drainage, the water table rose and the soil deteriorated. In 1954, Yinjing Irrigation District began on a trial basis to plan water use. Through continuous practice and the summing up of experience, the district has successively overcome the tendencies toward scholasticism and being divorced from reality which were prevalent during the early period of planned water use.
