ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on disrupt patriotism and its biasing effect on reporting. It argues that journalists should adopt globalism as a moral ideology and become global patriots for human flourishing. One way to categorize forms of patriotism is to distinguish them according to the object of their loyalty and according to the strength of that loyalty. The values of moderate, democratic patriotism run directly against the values of extreme patriotism. Patriotism needs to be compatible with global values such as advancing global democracy, reducing global poverty, and respect for human rights anywhere in the world. Nation-based patriotism is too parochial to guide journalism in an era of global reporting on global issues. Democratically engaged journalists, in adopting the stance of a global patriot, make their primary duty the promotion of human flourishing and, as a crucial component of flourishing, the protection of human rights and the strengthening of egalitarian democratic culture and institutions globally.
