ABSTRACT

This chapter considers practical measures and guidelines for engaged journalism in problem areas. It also considers measures to help detox the public sphere: how to respond to fake news, how to respond to extreme populists, and how journalist and civic groups can collaborate to "macro-resist" these dark arts. Extreme populism is based on the anti-democratic, anti-egalitarian idea of the alleged rightful dominance of a certain group of citizens, which comes to define the people. The coalition would be a major step toward the creation of a society-wide sixth estate that would focus on evaluating the media practice not only of mainstream journalists but also the media practice of citizens and advocacy groups. Journalism must earn the public's reliance every day. Government and society must take steps to address problems beyond what journalists can fix. Macro-resistance requires action from society in general. Many of the problems of our polluted public sphere are due to economic and other inequalities between social classes.
