ABSTRACT

This chapter is headed ‘the futures’ because, as should be clear by now, there is no one model or type of journalism that will dominate the future. The future is always uncertain, but one thing is certain. The internet has changed the game in all spheres of human activity and everyone on the planet potentially has a voice and the opportunity to make that voice heard. Some governments and corporations are frightened by the possibilities this offers and have sought to constrain this new freedom, just as rulers sought to control the possibilities offered by the printing press. We must all hope that they fail – and some of the recent developments in news production offer a promise for a more transparent, accessible and accountable future for journalism.
