ABSTRACT

European party systems are undergoing considerable change owing to the changing social structures in most European countries. In Spain, 579 parties registered before the Constituent Assembly elections of 1977, but only a few were able to achieve representation. The victory in the US presidential elections by Donald Trump was a major boost to the ‘new right’ parties which clearly use populism to bring their message of overt nationalism to the population. The selection of an electoral system during the constitutional settlement is probably one of the most important tasks of a political elite. In the 2017 elections, the Conservative Party won the elections, but failed to achieve an absolute majority. The Lithuanian party system can be placed between the more consolidated Estonian and the less consolidated Latvian ones. The European Parliament elections bring together all the party families that exist in Europe.
