ABSTRACT

This chapter shows the concept of the mean and its computation and symbols and the use of the mean on normal data of either intervals and ratio scales of measurement. It explains the deviations of scores to be the distance of each score from the mean. When describing the distribution of a data, an average is reported as additional information about the data. However, the term average is ambiguous because several different types of averages are used in statistics. Subtracting the mean from each score produces the deviations from the mean. The mean is the balance point in a distribution of scores. The mean is almost always inappropriate for describing a highly skewed distribution. Another limitation of the mean is that it is appropriate only for use with interval and ratio scales of measurement. The mean should be used only with interval and ratio scales of measurement.
