ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes with a call for social policy focused evidenced-based research. Large longitudinal datasets, such as Understanding Society, UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS), can provide campaign groups, third-sector organisations and policymakers with insights into the nature of poverty and inequality in the form of representative samples, reinforcing qualitative evidence highlighting the lived experience of those facing poverty. If research is to address poverty and inequality, the totality of the income distribution requires a focus of attention. At the same time, social policy requires the development of evidenced-based research in which longitudinal analysis of representative samples can be utilised to their fullest extent.
