ABSTRACT

This chapter presents how the term honor is used in the English language. It discusses the theories of non-western honor and how it allegedly differs from western honor. Non-western honor is being studied in various disciplines: anthropology, the culture of honor theory and feminist theory. After all, Pitt-Rivers’ conceptual framework suggests non-western honor is basically a social phenomenon, albeit limited to men. Having many and diverse relationships within one’s community is not merely a status matter in itself, but an important measure for an individual’s social capital. Having a reputation for hospitality is a societal ideal in all communities. When individuals enjoy a reputation for hospitality and generosity—regardless of whether they consider themselves hospitable—it can enhance both their social relationships within their community and their social status. Couples (or individuals) who are infertile cannot meet important societal ideals, which as a result may negatively influence general sense of happiness, mutual relationships, relationships with families and their social status.
