ABSTRACT

This chapter has demonstrates that the long-term legacy of the rapes and sexual violence committed during the Bosnian war extends beyond individual survivors. Their families, marital relations and children have also been affected in various ways. According to Harvey, 'A host of person, event and environmental factors may influence individual posttraumatic response and recovery'. Families are an important environmental factor that can contribute to shaping the long-term effects of rape and sexual violence. According to a psychologist in Tuzla who has worked for many years with survivors of rape and sexual violence, 'It is important for survivors to understand their behaviour and to understand how it affects those around them, and in particular their children'. Rape and sexual violence can significantly affect sex drive and sexual functioning in male survivors. According to Khamis, 'The parent-child relationship involves a dynamic interplay between dyadic emotions and behaviors'.
