ABSTRACT

Chapter Four looks to percussion activity in South Australia’s capital city of Adelaide. This city was the centre of significant precursory activity that laid the foundations for Australian contemporary percussion to emerge in other cities, however it was not until the 1980s that professional percussion activity outside of orchestral traditions in Adelaide truly began to take root. The 1980s and 1990s were a prolific time for percussion in Adelaide, led by the activities of professionals based at three tertiary institutions: Richard Smith, Ryszard Pusz, and James Bailey. This chapter focuses on the South Australian repertoire commissioned by Adelaide Percussions, including a comprehensive list of works. This is followed by a discussion of experimental activity in the 1990s, inclusive of solo and duo performances by Vanessa Tomlinson and Catherine Oates’ duo Rhythm Method.
