ABSTRACT

In the language of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, the Parts are divided into three categories: the Manager, the Exile, and the Firefighter. In his book Internal Family Systems Therapy, Dr Schwartz compares the relationship between the Self and the Parts with an orchestra. The conductor has a deep love, understanding, and appreciation for each of the musicians. The musicians respect and trust the leadership of the conductor. If a musician has a problem, the conductor stops the orchestra to give them needed attention. When the problem is resolved, the orchestra resumes playing. The Exiles collect traumatic memories and negative messages from people in the past and turn them into the core belief system. The other Parts rally around to lock the Exiles away to keep us from feeling uncomfortable intense emotions and painful memories.
