ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explains how the NL plays an important role in learning. It presents some of the tenets associated with formal approaches and showed the centrality of UG in an understanding of second language acquisition (SLA). The book accounts for only a portion of the complex phenomenon of SLA. It focuses on the importance of the lexicon. The book discusses the role of typological universals in the acquisition of a second language (L2) and also the acquisition of phonology, as well as the tense–aspect system. It also discusses psycholinguistic approaches to SLA. The book considers the role of social and discoursal context in SLA. It presents the concepts of input, interaction, and output, and explains how these ideas are relevant to acquisition itself. The book examines how instruction can affect L2 learning. It deals with learner-internal factors involved in SLA, and related disciplines.
