ABSTRACT

A coalition is "a single group or alliance formed by a number of separate groups, states, and people to further a common interest or achieve a shared purpose". Feminist coalition building predates any single person or time period, but Bernice Johnson Reagon popularized the idea in 1981 at the West Coast Women’s Music Festival. Just as there are many kinds of feminism, there are also many kinds of feminist activism. Rather than deciding which is “best”, think of how different forms of activism are complementary, how multiple actions are necessary to resolve complex problems, and how doing something that helps make a positive difference in people’s lives also helps sustain own participation in the process. One of the more famous feminist artworks is American artist Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, "an important icon of 1970s feminist art and a milestone in twentieth-century art".
