ABSTRACT

The politically impactful and recurring FeesMustFall (FMF) protests, on their own, and the associated talk of a new revolution as a consequence of their occurrence are all happening in the south Africa (SA) that is already suffering a critical economic/financial meltdown. SA's criticisms and ridiculing of middle and upper class students who participated in the 2015/16 protests are woefully uninformed. Equally, the easy presupposition that only the proletariat could execute a revolution in SA and eventually eject the ANC-led government is misguided. Students, like some in the middle classes, are already revolting. The state of the economy is implicated in this revolt. A great deal of the social conditions under which the poor live were made so by white governments' discriminatory policies. Because of this, the majority of black people tend to lean on the side of reform rather than a new revolution.
