ABSTRACT

The European Union (EU) is currently India’s main trading partner absorbing approximately one quarter of its exports and accounting for roughly the same proportion of its imports. In 1996 total EU-India trade was estimated to be ECUM 18,483 while India’s exports to the EU rose by 85.3 per cent in the period 1991 to 1996. Between 1995 and 1996 alone exports grew by 10.2 per cent while imports from the EU grew at a more modest 4.8 per cent.
