ABSTRACT

Of the oldest supra-national macro powers which emerged after the Second World War, that which carried out wide-ranging changes to the centre-periphery conflicts within its sphere was that which had the project of European construction as its catalyst. Pro-European projects arose out of the era of a Europe destroyed by two devastating world wars and the determination to prevent a new war between France and Germany. The centre-periphery conflicts have been modified within the sphere of the European Union (EU); state-national centres have become peripheral with respect to the EU, while peripheries operate on a variable geometry terrain in which there are already players besides the nation-state. The Single European Act stipulated, with the aim of establishing the Single European Market, the quadruple free movement of goods and services, capital and people by January 1993.
